Machining System for Sheet Material, Batch Machining and Extrusions

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Datron Dynamics, Inc. has released a version of their high-speed machining technology in a much larger format to accommodate sheet material, lengthy extrusions and large-run batch machining. The ML-1500 machining system is specially designed for the precise machining of large-format workpieces. The useable machining area is 60” x 40”(W x D). The solid-granite, vibration-dampened construction with precision linear guides is the basis for high surface quality – while machining at high speed. High-frequency spindles up to 60,000 rpm and a minimal-quantity, electronically measured, spray-mist coolant system provides perfect, burr-free milling and engraving results. The Microsoft Windows-based controller works with virtually any CAD/CAM software and offers Ethernet networking capability, as well as remote monitoring and control, allowing the machine to seamlessly integrate into any manufacturing environment. The ML-1500 is specifically designed for machining of high-quality aluminum panels at top speed, 3D machining of plastics and molds, CNC-milling of large aluminum profiles and milling and engraving industrial signage from brass, zinc, copper, magnesium, aluminum and engineered composites.

According to Datron Vice President, Robert Murphy, “Many of our current customers chose us due to our large work area vs. small footprint. This machine has a work area that is double the width.” Murphy explains, “This model is ideal for architectural signage, batch machining and aerospace manufacturers cutting composite materials – it has a granite bed for extreme accuracy and an industrial HSK spindle for superior surface finish.” What makes the ML-1500 appealing to those industries are integrated options like vacuum workholding and DATRON’s new CleanCut system which surrounds the machining spindle and extracts composite and aluminum chips before they ever hit the workpiece.

For industrial signage and other sheet material applications the ML-1500 comes with VacuMate(TM), an integrated vacuum table, as an option. VacuMate(TM) is designed to swiftly and efficiently secure flat workpieces to the bed of a machining system. Thin stock, which could be secured only with great difficulties before, is now secured literally within seconds. Quickly secure plastic foils as thin as 0.001″, to 0.250″ large aluminum sheets. A vacuum pump provides vacuum power for the system to work. A vacuum table features airflow-optimized vacuum ports, with recessed vacuum chambers, to provide superior vacuum distribution. A low cost gas-permeable substrate serves as a sacrificial vacuum diffuser, allowing the cutter to machine through the workpiece, without cutting into the table.

Other available options include a Z-Correction Probe(TM) that measures surface irregularities and compensates for them dynamically, a 3D Probe Extension that enables Z-Correction Probe to function in 3D (X, Y & Z), a Renishaw TP20 Probe for complex part measurement, Quick-Pallets(TM) workholding for quick setup and a Digital I/O that provides 8 outputs from the CNC control.

About Datron: Datron Dynamics is the North American distributor for DATRON AG, a German technology firm established in 1969 that has become a leader in the design and development of CNC machining and dispensing systems. Founded in 1996 by President, William King, Datron Dynamics is differentiated in the marketplace by its focus on high-speed machining with micro-tooling. Datron machines feature 40,000-60,000 RPM spindles that produce low force, feed rates of up to 1000″/minute and superior quality when using tooling 0.50″ and under. An Ethanol-Mist Coolant System(TM) provides superb surface finishes and eliminates secondary processes like de-burring and de-greasing. Other features such as the Z-Correction Probe(TM), Automatic Tool Management System(TM) and their proprietary Quick-Pallets(TM) and Vacumate(TM) workholding systems enable batch machining and “lights-out” production. These distinctions have resulted in thousands of installations worldwide within industries requiring superior production of EDM electrodes, embossing dies, 3D mold making, rapid prototyping, 3D precision engraving, front panels and the production of automotive and aerospace parts.

LANCNC Controller for CNCs from Calmotion

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Calmotion announces the LANCNC controller, which allows fast drag and drop bi-directional file transfers between any CNC and PCs on a network without additional software. Also, the LANCNC uses a 2 GB SD card to store programs at the CNC, allowing the CNC to access program information without using network resources. In the event of a network outage, operations such as file transfer and DNC are unaffected. Using the SD card, files can be transferred from the machine to the server without requiring network resources.

calmotion-lancnc-fad.jpg

The LANCNC operates with standard PC software, such as MS Internet Explorer. The LANCNC can be given a name and added to the “My Computer” window of a Windows PC. There are no additional licenses or additional interface software requirements for the controller. A programmer can simply drag and drop a file from a PC to the controller. Once loaded on the controller, an operator can load the file into CNC memory or drip feed a program directly from the file server. Also, programs can be saved from CNC memory to the controller.

Should the network crash, machine operators can add new files by plugging the LANCNC’s SD memory card into the PC for an update. The standard 2 GB SD memory card can then be reinstalled into the LANCNC for immediate use. Larger memory options can be achieved by purchasing off the shelf SD cards.

File selection and transfer are accomplished via a LCD display with keypad module mounted on the CNC pendant eliminating the need coordinate file transfer with a remote PC on the shop floor. A search and mid-tape start function allows the start of a program at a specific location. For example, if a tool were to break, the program can be restarted at the exact location where the break occurred. Prior to executing a mid-tape start, preparatory data can be entered. X-Modem protocol is available to ensure the highest level of data packet transmission communication with the CNC.

The LANCNC can operate as a wireless server with the addition of a low-cost wireless router. This cuts the substantial cost of installing Ethernet wiring between the server and machines, as well as allows machines to be located further from the network server. Additionally, for shops that frequently move machines, it cuts the time and cost of rerouting cables.
